August 15-21 , Fishing Report for Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley On August 15, the elevation of Kentucky Lake was 358.9 feet and the surface water temperature was 80 degrees. The elevation of Lake Barkley was 358.2 feet and the surface water temperature was 79 degrees. Summer pool for both lakes is 359 feet and winter pool is 354 feet. (To check daily elevations and projected levels of Kentucky Lake call 1-800-238-2264, lake #33.) CRAPPIE: Crappie fishing is fair on Kentucky Lake. Some crappies have been taken on Kentucky Lake using live minnows fished on creek ledges in 10 to 20 feet of water. BASS: Smallmouth fishing is fair on Kentucky Lake using jigs or crank baits fished at creek mouth and main lake points. Largemouth fishing is fair on the main lake ledges. Bass can be taken on plastic worms, jigs, or deep diving crank baits fished in 15 to 20 feet of water. Other bass can be taken inside the creeks using crank baits or spinner baits fished on rocky shore lines. BLUEGILL: Bluegill fishing is fair to good on both lakes using red worms or crickets fished in pockets inside the creeks in 4 to 6 feet of water. Shaded areas such as fallen trees and boat docks have also been productive. WHITE BASS: White and yellow bass fishing is fair on both lakes. White bass can be found on the humps near the river channel in 15 to 25 feet of water during times of current. One ounce jigging spoons bounced off the bottom have been productive. SAUGER: Sauger fishing is fair on Kentucky Lake using live large minnows fished on main lake gravel bars and creek mouth ledges in 12 to 20 feet of water. CATFISH: Catfish fishing is good on Kentucky Lake using night crawlers or shrimp fished in 20 to 30 feet of water on the main lake and at creek mouths. FISHING TIP: Night fishing for largemouth bass has been very good on Kentucky Lake using black ½ oz. spinner baits fished near rocky shore lines. These fish are very shallow.
