August 16, 2013 Protecting the future includes public flood insurance: Hehr Calgary – On the heels of the Redford Conservatives announcement that they are making changes to their flood policies, Alberta Liberal MLA Kent Hehr is offering his public flood insurance program as the best way forward to protect Alberta from a run on the public purse in the event of another disaster. Hehr first announced the idea weeks after the devastating floods in Southern Alberta and the idea has been gaining momentum across the province. “If the Redford Conservatives have decided to start listening to Albertans, there are groups who support my idea who are willing to be heard,” says Hehr. “We simply can’t move entire communities, like downtown Calgary, out of flood zones but we need to work to mitigate future damage physically and financially.” Hehr has been hearing from numerous constituents and community groups, along with the Calgary Herald editorial board and the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation that a public flood insurance program is necessary to protect Albertans in future disasters. “A number of other jurisdictions have adopted various models of public flood or disaster insurance,” says Hehr. “The province is on a fool’s errand if they don’t act proactively to solve a problem that is inevitably going to happen again.” Hehr says preventing future damages by relocating homes and businesses, and prohibiting future developments on floodways is only half of the battle. He is urging the government to implement public flood insurance as a fiscally responsible way to protect future generations. -30- For more information, contact: Amy McBain, Director of Communications Tel: 780.427.7438.
