August 17 140 miles today. The southwest monsoon has carried us to within three days sail of Liberia, Africa. A butterfly came on board today, undoubtedly blown from the nearest point on the coast of Africa. I chloroformed him (and still have him among my souvenirs). We are now in the southeast trade winds. Our meals on board are not so bad: For breakfast we generally have oatmeal, hominy, buckwheat cakes with stewed ham, and the fare varies from day to day between canned salmon, codfish tongues and sounds, pickled tripe, salt mackerel or salt beef. For dinner we have salt beef, canned meats, baked beans or boneless herring with potatoes (as long as they last, which will not be long) and canned tomatoes, corn or peas. Our suppers consist of dried or salt beef, followed by preserves or pie- apple, blueberry, peach or damson. Hard and soft bread are always to be had, and the water is very good.
