August 17, 2013 Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Few Americans will look at this beatitude once, much less twice. Our heroes are Clint Eastwood, Jason Bourne, and the military folks who got Osama Bin Laden. And people with the courage to speak out the truth on the radio or TV. Meekness? Ha! Even to consider being meek is somehow stupid. It is wrong, it is insane. Yet there it is, like it or not. Jesus says so Then you realize that only meekness is true strength, spiritual strength, and the deeper courage. It is easier to be outraged, to fight and fight back. It is natural—but not the right thing—to settle scores, to defeat enemies, to smugly annihilate people who disagree with us with smart, decisive and cruel words. Meekness IS power, the real power. NOT to say the cutting expression, the triumphant reason, or get in the last word—but instead, with Jesus, to respect everyone as our brothers and sisters. Meekness IS power.
