August 1st, 2014 Weather Highlight(s): A shortwave is moving - TopicsExpress

August 1st, 2014 Weather Highlight(s): A shortwave is moving through the Pacific NW today and is followed by another one that will move through Washington over the weekend. Ridge flattens and shifts east to the passage of these shortwaves. Significant lightning will continue over Oregon and spread north into Washington today and through the weekend. Thunderstorms will develop west of the Cascades today and tomorrow with all of the thunderstorms being a mix of wet/dry. Temperatures will remain near to above normal today and RH will remain low but will modify in areas of better thunderstorm coverage. A thermal trough will increase fire activity especially east of the Cascades but possibly in SW Oregon through the weekend. Some of its effects could be modified by the passing shortwaves. Fire Potential: Moderate to heavy IA and multiple new large fires are expected through the weekend with the majority of the activity in central and eastern Oregon/Washington. Due to the recent and forecasted lightning west of the Cascades, fire activity is expected to increase as well. Fuels continue to cure due to the hot and dry conditions across the region. Burn environments in most areas will be at least normal for this time of year and some areas in central and eastern Oregon/Washington are elevated. High risks for large fires due to a combination of significant lightning and receptive fuels exist for central and eastern Oregon/Washington PSAs through the weekend.
