August 2-Leave/Cleave “...For this reason shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh” (Ephesians 5:31). The reason is found in the prior scripture. “For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones” (Ephesians 5:30). As Christians we are one with Him (John 17:21). Do you remember how the Bible describes the way Adam and Eve were made? They were made in the image of God. So as members of His body, we are to be unified as one even as the LORD and his bride, the church. The relationship of husband and wife is being compared to that of Christ and the church. That initial uniting/bonding is critical. Just as infants bond with their mothers, couples who bond immediately after marriage develop closer attachment. That is why both bride and groom must leave in order to cleave to their newly developed family. Immediacy is critical. Come Holy Spirit!
