August 22, 1959 ... At #2, The Drifters, featuring Ben E. King on lead vocal, with There Goes My Baby. This song, co-written by King and many others, including songwriting legends Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, was the first single released by the second incarnation of the Drifters. The group, formerly known as The 5 Crowns, were selected by manager George Treadwell to assume the Drifters name after he fired the few remaining members of the original Clyde McPhatter-led Drifters, following a fracas between the group and the manager of Harlems Apollo Theater. The new group met with hostile audiences at first, but found sweet success with their collaboration with Atlantic Records Leiber and Stoller. There Goes My Baby introduced the idea of using orchestral strings and elaborate production to enhance the sound of R&B music, techniques which later inspired Phil Spectors wall of sound. There Goes My Baby peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 and topped the soul chart.
