August 22, 2014 - Yesterday, Korie-Lyn and I met with my Chemo Oncologist and his resident. We discussed the results of my latest CT scan and did not encounter any really new information over last week’s cursory review. The Cancer is still active but the ‘spots’ have not grown appreciably, nor has it spread anywhere else at this time. There is no sign of any return of the disease (cancer) to the original sites in my tonsils and neck glands areas, which were originally treated by radiation and chemo two years ago. We had a great discussion and ultimately, Korie-Lyn and I decided, with the Oncologist agreeing, to postpone chemo treatment again and the Oncologists will schedule my next scan in 16 weeks. Of course, should I notice any other symptoms or complications I can call him immediately. Each cancer is as different as each patient and although they were not optimists, they were up beat about how I am doing. Yes, I feel fine and hope to keep getting stronger but the litany of damage remains: Nerve damage on the left side of my neck, tongue, and one vocal cord (affecting voice and projection); loss of peripheral sensation and sensitivity in my fingertips and toes, (no more playing guitar!). These damages appear to be permanent. The loss of higher frequency hearing and some balance or enhanced typical male hearing loss from chemo resulting in hearing aid use is also permanent. So, again, I chose to live rather than trade some life for feeling ill from treatment at this time. In the words of Budda, “ The Trouble is, that you think you have time”. That holiday you keep putting off with your spouse? Don’t wait. That job move you were thinking about? The right time will never be now so jump! Give those special people in you life a hug and let them know you care. Tomorrow may be too late. Hugs to all of you and I hope to see all of you in my journey in the next few months. ☺
