August 22 marks the 223rd anniversary of the Haitian Revolution - TopicsExpress

August 22 marks the 223rd anniversary of the Haitian Revolution (1791–1804)--a tremendously remarkable event that sharpened and shaped the dialectics of the history of human emancipation, to the extent that events are the real dialectics of history, as Antonio Gramsci once put it. To quote the Caribbean Marxist thinker-activist C.L.R. James--one whose magnum opus _The Black Jacobins_ provides a politically significant and wonderfully novelistically crafted account of the Haitian Revolution: ...] the black Jacobins of St Domingue were to make history which would alter the fate of millions of people and shift the economic currents of three continents.
