August 24th In Schwerin, Germany, former 2 division champ Arthur - TopicsExpress

August 24th In Schwerin, Germany, former 2 division champ Arthur Abraham came back from his surprising March 23rd loss to German Robert Stieglitz. In Schwerin Abraham took on Namibian Willbeforce Shihepo to get himself in position for a 3rd fight with Stieglitz. Though Abraham landed the cleaner and harder shots during the fight, Shihepo kept himself very busy and stayed on his feet the whole 12 rounds. At the end Abraham did just enough to get the unanimous decision, but couldn´t really impress. Still a lot of work for Ulli Wegner, to get his once so promising fighter another major title. Main event of the evening was the European light heavyweight championship between Juergen Braehmer from Germany and Italian Stefano Abatangelo. Braehmer, a former WBO World super middleweight champion, did enough to almost win every round, but could not really hurt his challenger. Abatangelo showed great courage, good defense and a strong chin, but lacked the skills and the size to trouble the German, who won a wide unanimous decision. Braehmer will likely get a world title shot next. With the impression of Sergey Kovalevs latest fights it´s hard to see Braehmer getting back a title. However, Braehmer has fast hands and some better pop in his fists than Nathan Cleverly and Kovalev for sure is easier to hit than Abatangelo. Could be a cracker. An interesting heavyweight clash had to determine the next challenger for Wladimir Klitschkos IBF title. Former Bulgarian amateur star Kubrat Pulev took on top US heavyweight Anthony Thompson. The 41 years old Thompson, who has beaten British prospect David Price twice this year, came to Gemany with a lot of confidence. He started well the first few rounds, but Pulev took the fight over in the second half, when Thompson got tired. It went the full distance of 12 rounds with Pulev awarded the unanimous decision by scores of 116-112, 117:111 and 118:110. On the undercard undefeated German super middleweight prospect Tyron Zeuge beat Nathan King from Wales by unanimous decision. In a clash of unbeaten light heavyweights 2012 Olympian Enrico Koelling from Germany stopped Austrian Haris Causevic by TKO in the 3rd round. Another light heavyweight from Germany, Dustin Dirks, had to deal with an 8 round draw. Dirks, who in his last fight surprisingly got stopped by Ukrainian Oleksandr Cherviak , took on Tomas Adamek from Czech republic (not to confuse with Tomasz Adamek from Poland). Bet on Dirks getting feed to Koelling soon!
