August 26: Deja’ vu. How many times have we found ourselves in a situation that gives us the feeling what have been there before? Isn’t it ironic that we try hard to recreate situations or circumstances we enjoyed, go back to places where we had a great vacation, because it was pleasant. But how often do we work to correct situations or circumstances to keep us from duplicating a bad experience? August 26, 1862, the stage became set for the “Second Battle of Bull Run when Confederate General Fitzhugh Lee’s cavalry captured the vital railroad at Manassas Junction. Three days later, outside of town, a second major campaign was waged between Union and Confederate troops over much of the same ground around Manassas and Bull Run as the first major conflict of the Civil War 13 months earlier. Some things had changed during that time, including Union military leadership. But the circumstances were similar and the results were the same – a major Confederate victory. How many times do we continue to repeat circumstances because we have not learned? As Christians, we cannot just admit our transgressions; we have to work to prevent them from reoccurring. Do actions match our words? God hears our words, but he knows our hearts as well. Even if we say one thing, He knows if we actually mean another. As a result, we may wind up waging a new fight over the same battlefield. Do not go at it alone; take the Lord with you into battle. “But Moses said, “Why are you disobeying the Lord’s command? This will not succeed! Do not go up, because the Lord is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies.” (Numbers 14: 41-42)
