August 27 Refuge of Lies - A Word From Steve Hill You boast, “We have entered into a covenant with death, with the grave we have made an agreement. When an overwhelming scourge sweeps by, it cannot touch us, for we have made a lie our refuge and falsehood our hiding place.” Isaiah 28:15, NIV The Lord desires to bless us; His plan for our lives is perfect. However, many of us choose to distance ourselves from His presence. Fear of His demands or shame over our sin causes us to run and hide. But where do we take refuge? The devil lies to us by inviting us to hide in the refuge of running. Adam, Eve, and especially Jonah can testify to the frailty of such a fortress. What foolishness to try to outrun God. This is not a feasible feat. Others are hiding in the refuge of relationships. Running to friends before running to God is no answer. Whose companionship do you value more highly than the Savior’s? Your friends and family can’t stand beside you on Judgment Day. This hiding place is like a house of cards. When the wind of His Spirit blows, it comes crashing down. Perhaps you are hiding in the refuge of religion. Religion is an adherence to a set of beliefs—it will never serve as payment for pardon. Our religious acts won’t save us. A person can go to hell hiding behind a choir robe. Many are hiding from the Lord in the refuge of riches. It is sad how countless people are caught up in creature comforts. Rather than running to God, many are found running from Him, indulging in selfish, sensual pleasures. The Lord will destroy the refuge of lies. My counsel to everyone is this: If you’re going to run, do it full speed into the arms of Jesus. He is the only refuge!
