August 29: After a long time had passed, the Jews conspired to kill Saul, but their plot became known to Saul. Now they were keeping watch on the gates day and night so as to kill him, but his disciples took him one night and let him down through an opening in the wall, lowering him in a basket. When he arrived in Jerusalem he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple. Then Barnabas took charge of him and brought him to the apostles, and he reported to them how he had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had spoken out boldly in the name of Jesus. He moved about freely with them in Jerusalem, and spoke out boldly in the name of the Lord. He also spoke and debated with the Hellenists, but they tried to kill him. And when the brothers learned of this, they took him down to Caesarea and sent him on his way to Tarsus. (Acts 9:23-30, NAB) Prayer: [Excerpted from the hymn Am I a Soldier of the Cross? (1721-4) by Isaac Watts (Jul. 17, 1674 - Nov. 25, 1748); written with conjunction with a sermon on 1 Corinthians 16:13] Must I be carried to the skies On flowery beds of ease, While others fought to win the prize, And sailed through bloody seas? Amen. youtube/watch?v=4HOSRLm_emo
