August 29. Hard to believe that such a little thing as a date can have such an impact on emotions. I guess it is simple really. Its happened to people throughout history. A date that may mean nothing to anyone outside of a little bubble can bear so much significance to those inside the bubble. Nine years ago, I was in a hotel in Memphis, watching news, meeting folks that had made the hotel reservations for us for lunch and waiting. That night was one hell of a weather event, as Katrina moved through that area. In the morning, the news was coming in about the levee breaches, the flooding, the devastation that was only really beginning. We were in Memphis for 2 weeks before we went to Baton Rouge and stayed with some of my then-fiancees family friends. We stayed there for 4 months before we could come back to our apartment. Nothing was ever really the same again. I could talk about a myriad of facets related to that event. Really, though, the important thing is that every day people are learning lessons from that event: about themselves, about their city, about resiliency, about planing, recovery, etc.. And, in the strangest twist, for me at least, I am no earning a degree which should, ultimately, help prepare for, prevent (as much as is possible), and how to recover from events such as these. Maybe that is why I am so gung-ho on the MPS program. Maybe that is why I am doing well. I may never actually figure it out, but regardless, it is what it is.
