August 3, 2013 Meeting Information: 1st Saturday of every month @ 1:00 Location: St. Joseph REC Center 2701 SW Parkway St. Joseph, MO 64503 Standing outing: Third Saturday of every month. We will meet at 9:00 AM. Rain date will be the following Saturday if it rains or water is too high. Secretary report – Gerry Walker reviewed the minutes from June and July. Minutes were approved as presented. Treasurer and store report – Jim Dye gave the treasurer and store report. Jim noted sale items for this month. The treasurer report was approved as presented. A treasurer report is available for review if the members wish to review it. There are a few needs for the store such as shovels and picks. There is also a membership available in the store. Raffle Report – LeRoy Walker reported current raffles include the fossil, gold wheel and a GPAA membership kit. Outing report - Bernie Sheffer gave the outing report. July Outing: Colorado trip report with Itemized Cost Report- Bernie showed a picture of a piece of a nugget found on the trip. Everyone said they had a good time. The tour of the Hidee Mine was enjoyed by all. The group looked for gold in the local creeks and a couple of other organized settings. Bernie was recognized for the hard and detailed work on this project. He spent many hours putting together and seeking information. Letters of appreciation will be sent to Vic’s Gold Panning, Hidee Mine. – Ramon and John were both very helpful, knowledgeable, and had volunteered their time on a day off to give us a tour and share their experiences. Old business Salvation Army report – Recent donations were taken to the Salvation Army. New business 1. Nugget Bought for Christmas Party – the heart shaped nugget will be the final drawing for the all gold Christmas Party at the December meeting. A motion was made, seconded and approved. 2. Outing for August - The third Saturday (August 17) in August. There is no rain date for this outing. Rochester Falls is the location. Bring your equipment. We always find gold. A nugget found in the area was shown to the group. It was found crevice. The club will furnish the meat and condiments. Members are asked to bring side dishes to share with the group. Bring things for the raffle. Bernie will bring his dredge and high banker. We have permission of the land owner but we need to be sure to respect the crops. 3. A donation of a prospector and mule statue was made anonymously to the group (sorry for the announcement, donor). The statue was auctioned for $55. Jim Dye had the winning bid. 4. Melvin discussed the publication; Mining Journal – it is a magazine related to mining and equipment. 5. Melvin also reminded the group that what is seen on TV is not real prospecting. We need to be ready to defend safe and responsible metal detecting and prospecting. The content seen on TV is not reality and most is staged / scripted. 6. Program Discussion by Membership- suggestions were asked for possible learning needs to address in the meetings and outings a. more “how to videos” b. how to separate minerals c. instructions about finding fine gold d. find a geologist to talk about quartz Show and tell – several members shared new finds. Tom Gabriel shared some of his experiences in Alaska. State Director Update: 1. Doug Foster, the new Missouri Director, explained his new role and encouraged members to contact him if they have issues they would like to have looked into. 2. The announcement of Doug’s new position will appear in the Pick and Shovel’s September edition. 3. Doug also shared that he will be doing panning demonstrations and talking with folks in Lexington, MO next Saturday. 4. Doug explained the process for acquiring new locations – when a site is located and gold is looked for, be sure to give a small bottle with gold finds from the property in it. This is a great way to promote good will and a great way to gain permission to use property for outings and personal use. Raffle – Thanks to those who provided donations to the general raffle!
