August 31, 22nd Sunday of the Year Matthew 16: 21-27 Lose your Life for Christs Sake The great turn around in the lives of certain historical personages is their conversion story. Their change of heart echoes in the history of the Church. Ignatius of Loyola hit by a cannon ball, recuperating from his wounds, bid goodbye to wine, women, song and adventure to embrace the life of a pilgrim, a hermit and finally a priest, founding the Society of Jesus. His conversion story led to other conversions and his brave and intelligent religious order defended the Church from Martin Luther, leading to recovery of the Catholic Church many parts of Germany and Europe. Jesus says today that blessed are those who lose their lives for his sake. They will make history turn -- only those who are really selfless, sacrificial and without any taint of egoism, shake history. To lose our life means we have decided to trust fully God, putting our life in his hands knowing that we are better off when we are under his control. Conversion is about that. Some wild souls like Ignatius of loyola, St. Augustine, Blessed Charles de Foucald literally put themselves in Gods hands by having nothing, possessing nothing and asking God to provide them for their next meal -- or else, they go hungry and starve. God acts through them, and thus, these saints shine like stars. There is only one tragedy, the tragedy that we are not yet all saints, observed a philosopher. Unless we are able to put our lives in the hands of God, we will remain drifting towards the unknown and thus, it is good to ponder: why dont we try Jesus exhortation of losing our lives for him?
