August 5, 2014 The Family of Sis. Mildred Lee Bell c/o New Hope Friendship Missionary Baptist Church 2205 Harrison Avenue San Diego, California 92113 Dear Audrey, Joey, Bell and New Hope Friendship Families, My heart is broken to hear of the homegoing of my friend, Sis. Mildred Lee Bell. I want you to know that your have the prayers and spiritual support of the pastor and membership of First Baptist Church in Frankfort, Kentucky. Sis. Bell’s passing marks the end of an era at New Hope Friendship. As the last surviving band of believers, with little resources and big faith, decided to serve the Lord by organizing Friendship Baptist Church, the Church Clerk’s book of records were placed into the capable hands of a young woman who held those records faithfully during the tenure of all of pastors who served. In the words of the old country folk, “she knew where all the bodies were buried.” She was a historian of the highest order and she loved her Lord Jesus Christ and His church. It saddens me that some people join a church and show no desire for its care. Mildred was not one of those people. Mildred taught Sunday School, served as Church Clerk and a Trustee, raised generations of young singers in what I had the privilege to rename as “The Bell Choir,” she participated financially and sacrificed when the church was in lean times. Her and her husband, George, were faithful members. She dearly, dearly loved her family, who all raised in the Church. After my departure from New Hope Friendship in 2004, Mildred and I kept in touch with each other. I’d call or visit her when I was in the area. We would catch up and even though we were professionally separated, we were spiritually connected for a lifetime. She would not let me go. She would not sever our ties. She continued to pray for me, counsel with me, and share her wisdom with me. She was my elder but she was my friend. I never hung up the phone without saying “I love you.” The thing I will always remember about Mildred was her hair. She was so comfortable in her skin that she rocked that Afro for years and years and years. I loved this woman so much and she has now her well deserved rest. Mildred, “I love you.” Sure of Eternal Life, Robert Earl Houston, Senior Pastor
