August 7, 2013 Press Release by Garfield Dunlop, MPP Simcoe North MPP Dunlop: ENCOURAGES ORILLA TO CONTINUE WITH OPP Orillia known Canada wide as home of Canada’s premier police force (Orillia) – Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop is encouraging the City of Orillia and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to resolve their issues regarding policing of the city. Dunlop feels Orillia has been very well served by the OPP, and they should continue to be the police force for the city. “Healthy and prosperous communities have low crime rates,” said Dunlop. “The City of Orillia has seen a reduction in crime since switching to the OPP. The OPP have the infrastructure and the skills to deliver on community policing, provide support to people with mental health, and in extreme situations the OPP can deal with major crime and emergencies.” “I am hoping the City of Orillia will re-evaluate the data and conclusions of the consultant’s report. A correct decision is so important for the community,” added Dunlop. The OPP and the City of Orillia have formed a strong mutually beneficial arrangement. In addition to having OPP General Headquarters in Orillia, the OPP recently constructed and opened Central Region Headquarters on Hurtubise Road. The new building serves as the provincial communications centre (911 emergency and non-emergency service) along with the general headquarters for in-service training units. The Central Region Headquarters oversees 14 detachments, four First Nations detachments and provides support to three other detachments. Central Region HQ is a 54,435-square-foot building and is one of 18 OPP infrastructure-upgrading projects across the province with an investment of $293 million. The building employs 203 police officers and civilians and covers 30,000 kilometres of land and lakes. “The building and associated officers are a great example of how the OPP supports the economy of Orillia beyond just public safety,” noted Dunlop. “Orillia has the largest concentration of active and retired OPP officers in Ontario. They are an integral part of the community and I would like to see them remain a respected and valued part of Orillia.” “With the strong presence of the OPP in Orillia, not having the OPP police Orillia would be like Alliston not allowing a Honda Dealership,” added Dunlop.
