August 7: “What do I get for it?” That is a question we often ask when we consider purchasing an item. We want to know the cost and what we get for the price. That is why the “buy-one-get-one-free” sales attract our attention. We like restaurants where portions are bigger for the same price. We “large-size” it for another 30 cents. We want to make sure we are getting our money’s worth – or better. Has anyone ever paid for your meal in a restaurant? You are thankful aren’t you? August 7, 1782, George Washington commissioned the creation of the Badge of Military Merit – signified by a piece of purple fabric in the shape of a heart. According to Washington’s papers, the honor was intended for soldiers who exhibited, "not only instances of unusual gallantry in battle, but also extraordinary fidelity and essential service in any way.” Around 150 years later, after various other types of recognitions were used, the Purple Heart Medal was established for soldiers wounded while in service of our country. It was recognition they received for the price they paid. We should be grateful to these men and women whose sacrifice helps us stay free in America. Someone else paid a large price for us. Jesus Christ did not receive a Purple Heart for his wounds. He was nailed to a cross to die. But He sacrificed his life for us and our sins so we would not have to suffer. We received the greatest gift at a high price that He paid for us. “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loves us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” (1 John 4:10)
