August 9, 1974. Forty years ago today I sat in my family room to watch one of the best things Ive ever seen on TV. I rolled a doobie, opened a half gallon of butter pecan ice cream - didnt even scoop it out, put the carton in a bowl to prevent melt leakage and ate the entire half gallon - stacked about two dozen Oreos on a plate, sat back and watched Richard Milhous Nixon blubber and ramble his way through his White House staff farewell speech. I was ecstatic. I breathed an enormous sigh of relief. When I saw Air Force 1 take off and disappear into the sky I imagined he was in there with his pants off, carving his initials in everything on the plane. I laughed for almost an hour. It was one of my happiest days ever. I walked on air for days.
