August 9, 2014 MEDITATING ON GOD’S WORD Scripture Reading: Psalm 119:97-104 Blessed is the one … whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night. —Psalm 1:1-2 The idea of meditating in order to gain a firm grasp on God’s Word does not come easily to many of us. We are often under pressure to perform, always hurrying to accomplish goals and hearing that “Time is money.” Meditation, on the other hand, takes thought, quiet, and calm, space to reflect and maybe even to write down your thoughts. Meditation moves us into the area of application of God’s Word. Here we ask these kinds of questions: What truth in this passage seems most relevant to my life? How should it change my character? What difference would it make in the way I think, speak, and act? What can I do this week to embrace this insight and put it into practice? The phrase “day and night” really means “all the time”—not just in times of worship. We can even expand this idea to ask, “Am I living according to a whole biblical worldview?” In other words, does everything I do at home or work or school glorify God? I fear that not many of us get to this deeper level of using God’s Word. Yet Jesus warned his listeners that simply hearing the Word but not putting it into practice is very dangerous (Matthew 7:24-27). Meditate on God’s Word and do what it says! Prayer Lord, we need to seriously reflect on what you say to us in your Word. By your Spirit, show us how we can leave our sin behind and live for you. Give us power to change our habits. Reveal how we can grow in love, joy, and peace. Amen.
