August 9th: Mr. Peabody and Sherman. The very first line of - TopicsExpress

August 9th: Mr. Peabody and Sherman. The very first line of the movie is an alleged pun based on the name of a yoga position. It isnt funny if you get the reference, and since almost nobody would get the reference its not even a joke to most people. That did not fill me with confidence going into the movie. Fortunately, it quickly moves into one of Peabody and Shermans time-traveling adventures in history. The travel to the French revolution is well paced and entertaining. The story moves into Shermans first day of school and the problems he experiences adjusting. In the movie, Mr. Peabody has legally adopted Sherman (winning the right in court) and Shermans difficulty is putting the adoption in jeopardy. Misadventure follows. The historical scenes throughout the film are cute and well done. Overall, the movie has a goofy charm that I didnt expect. Ty Burrell, who plays Phil on Modern Family was an odd choice for Mr. Peabody, but he does it really well. The voice cast is filled with great actors even in bit parts, and the director keeps the acting and tone from person to person consistent enough to believe the characters are talking to each other and werent recorded on different soundstages months apart. So thats a victory. The final act is satisfying, if completely predictable. I found myself snickering at the stupid puns throughout the movie despite knowing how terrible they were. The movie has faults, but theyre pretty easily ignored by going with the flow of it all. If you watched any of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius this pretty much follows the same vibe. All in all, Id definitely recommend it for a family film that everyone can enjoy (or at the very least tolerate).
