August Prayer Focus --- SHINE! On August 7, 1789, the United States Congress created the US Bureau of Lighthouses which placed the creation and maintenance of lighthouses under federal control. A lighthouse is a structure designed to emit light as a navigational aid for boats or ships moving through dangerous currents, reefs or along hazardous coastlines. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan declared August 7th as National Lighthouse Day --- celebrating these historic symbols in America. The oldest USA lighthouse is the Sandy Hook Light in New Jersey (1764) which is still operational. The last manned lighthouse, the Charleston Light in South Carolina, was built in 1962. The tallest is the Cape Hatteras Light in North Carolina (207 feet) and the shortest, the St. Clair South Channel Front Range Light in Michigan (17 feet). So what’s the big deal about lighthouses? They have a common purpose --- whether old or “young,” TALL or short --- it’s to SHINE and point the way. As we pray for our mission efforts this month let us remember the words of Matthew 5:14-16. “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
