Augusta College, Ky. Description Schmidts notes--Collins Historical Sketches, 1847: Augusta College, one of the best literary institutions of the west, is located at Augusta, Bracken County. It is under the patronage of the M.E. Church and was the first college ever established by that denomination in the world. The college was founded in 1822, has 6 professorships, and a preparatory and primary school attached to it. The number of students varies from 100 to 150. The library contains 2500 volumes. Commencement is on Thursday after the first Wednesday in August. Rev. Joseph S. Tomlinson, D.D., President. Perrins History of Kentucky, 1887: [Other presidents were] Martin Ruter, Henry B. Bascom, Burr H. McCown and others. The college building was destroyed by fire in 1852 but was immediately rebuilt. A few years later the college was closed.
