Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Lincoln, the Man, 1887 (produced for Lincoln Park, Chicago). This cast, 1912. Given to the Newark Museum by Franklin Murphy, Jr. in 1920, in memory of his father, Franklin Murphy. Lots of museums seem to own this statue--but for many years, Newark had the only version in public hands. Franklin Murphy, varnish magnate, NJ Governor, Newark Museum founding trustee. He lived in a mansion with an art gallery on Newarks Lincoln Park. He was an early supporter of Newarks collecting American art. - Ulysses Grant Dietz, Chief Curator
