Aurora Australis appearing over Kiama, Australia This wonderful timelapse footage of the Aurora Australis appearing over Kiama, NSW, on the east coast of Australia was shot in February 2014 by David Finlay. This video is particularly special as the Southern Lights are rarely seen this far north and are usually only visible from parts of Tasmania (Australia), New Zealand and Antarctica. The Aurora Australis is set to appear in the skies for the next few years as we begin the period of decline from the solar maximum that began in 2011. According to Dr. Murray Parkinson of the Australian Space Forecast Centre, the best auroras have been seen during the decline due to increases in solar winds and geomagnetic activity. Residents in Tasmania may be lucky enough to view them up to once a week, although the phenomenon may not always be recognisable due to their location on the horizon.
