Aussies next for JWS Their title hopes still alive, the Junior White Sox face trans-Tasman rivals Australia later this morning for a chance to make tomorrow’s ISF World Junrior Women’s Championship at Brampton, Canada. The Kiwis dispatched Puerta Rico 5-4 in another nail-biting encounter earlier this morning and can now finish no lower than fourth, one spot better than they managed in Cape Town two years ago. Puerta Rico scored first in the bottom of the first inning, but New Zealand countered when Tyneesha Houkamau scored fellow outfielders Ellie Cooper and Kingsley Avery in the second. Avery crossed home again in the fourth inning to stretch the lead, but a couple of errors soon allowed the Puerta Ricans back into a 4-3 lead. Avery and Lauren Tapp salvaged the situation in the sixth with the tying and winning runs. Aucklander Beth Stavert started on the pitching mound, conceding four hits and four runs, with three strikeouts. University of Wisconsin’s Taylor-Paige Stewart was credited with the win, pitching two innings of relief for two hits and two strikeouts. Avery finished with three runs off two hits and a walk, while second base Danica Ferriso had two hits and brought home the crucial two runs. The JWS now take on the Aussies at 11.30am (NZT), with the winners taking on the losers of USA v Japan for a spot in the title game.
