Austin American Statesman!! Cool! Calif. web hosting firm opening Austin offices Posted: 3:59 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2014 EmailFacebookTwitterShareThis By Lori Hawkins - American-Statesman Staff Metacloud, a fast-growing California web hosting company, is opening an Austin office to tap into the region’s high-tech labor pool. The Pasadena-based company plans to hire as many as 30 employees over the next two years in engineering, operations, marketing and sales. Metacloud was founded in 2011 by Sean Lynch, who ran technology operations at TicketMaster Entertainment and Steve Curry, who managed global storage operations at Yahoo Inc. The company provides operation and hosting of private OpenStack clouds for companies. OpenStack is free and open-source cloud computing software that was originally developed by San Antonio-based Rackspace and NASA. Metacloud is the latest company based outside of Austin to announce an expansion here. In recent months, Finnish design agency Idean, New York-based software maker Signpost and Australian software maker Atlassian have announced hiring plans in Central Texas. In May, Metacloud raised $15 million from investors including AME Cloud Ventures, Canaan Partners, Pelion Venture Partners and Silicon Valley Bank. The company has raised a total of $27 million. In addition to its Pasadena headquarters, the 40-person company has a sales office in Mountain View, Calif. It is looking for up to 10,000 square feet for its Austin operation. “It makes a lot of sense for us to invest in Austin because there’s a great deal of talent there,” Curry said, adding that the workforce in Austin is more stable that other regions such as Silicon Valley. “In Silicon Valley, employees typically stay with a company for a year and move around a lot. In Southern California, we’ve been able to build and invest heavily in a team and make sure they stay around a while. We saw a very similar market in Austin, and we’re excited about getting established there.” In addition, Metacloud said it has hired two key OpenStack executives from Rackspace, both of whom will work in the Austin office. Scott Sanchez will be vice president of strategy and Niki Acosta will be director of evangelism
