Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Julie Bishop, has announced Australia is providing a further AUD6 million to the Coral Triangle Initiative, supporting the 120 million people in the Asia-Pacific region who rely on rich and diverse marine life for their livelihoods. Often called ‘the Amazon of the seas’, the Coral Triangle is home to 76 per cent of the world’s known coral species. It also hosts the world’s highest reef-fish diversity: 37 per cent of known species live there. The support announced by Ms Bishop is in addition to the AUD7.2 million provided by Australia for the initiative since 2009.
