Australopithecus afarensis are hominid fossils found in Eastern Africa. A. afarensis is thought by anthropologists to be either a close relative to, or a direct ancestor of modern man. The fossils show characteristics of extinct great apes (such as large canines and molars, a small brain and a jaw that projects forward). The reason they are believed to be in the evolutionary lineage of man is the canines and molars that are reduced in size from apes, and reconstruction (from multiple different sets of bones) of hip structure suggests that they may have been at least partially bipedal with feet more similar to a modern human foot built for walking than one used for climbing in trees.
