Autism Awareness Tidbit #7: The Spectrum is Broad!! It is very unlikely that you will ever meet two Autistic children who are exactly alike. My child is high functioning/Aspergers but I have a good friend with a child on the polar opposite end of the spectrum meaning low functioning, non verbal, low IQ, severely Autistic...but theyre both Autistic and they are both amazing kids. And FYI: meeting an Autistic person and audibly saying oh, you mean like Rainman? is unacceptable. They cant all count cards or have savant talents. Some Autistic people are just regular folks with some extra fun stuff going on. Thats not to say that the savant stuff isnt out there...my kid is spatially gifted, he can look at puzzle pieces for a minute and assemble them without questioning what piece fits where. Its the most amazing thing Ive seen. Ive got a friend whose son can paint like master renaissance icon but cant print his own name or speak above a toddlers level at age 12. Autism is a strange and lively animal :)
