Autism and breastfeeding presents some unique challenges but some unique advantages too. Any Leakies here on the autism spectrum? How does that impact your breastfeeding and parenting experience? A recent study came out with information for health care providers in working with lactating moms on the autism spectrum. The information is fascinating and so helpful. Id love to see this get in the hands of more health care providers as well as moms. clinicallactation.org/sites/default/files/articlepdf/s5-CL5-2_PTR_A5_062-066.pdf Being on the autistic spectrum will not necessarily disadvantage a mother in learning to breastfeed, however, because frequently, breastfeeding education and support are experienced in the context of a one-on-one helping relationship, the characteristics of AS/ASD/HFA may interfere if not considered and accommodated by the educator. For the lactation specialist, these factors may impact the helping relationship between the professional and the mother—a relationship that often exists on a continuum of apprenticeship, intimacy, and trust. Support may be more effective for the lactation consultant who applies mindful attention to adopting a flexible style of teaching—and when needed—a loosening of conventional rubrics regarding interpreting the mother’s behavior and conceptualizing her struggles.
