Autism is so hard on my son at times because he is so smart about computers, virus, and he helps me with how to install software on my laptop. However I was reading his latest IEP and everything is low or below average for his age. It affects his involvement and progress in the general education classroom. Due to cognitive and social deficits, grade material is difficult for him to comprehend and complete. All the scores in adaptive composite, conceptual, social, practical, ect are extremely low, borderline, or average. He was administered the WISC IV by the school psychologist this year and the scores are low, very low or extremely low. However the psychologist says Michael unique set of thinking and reasoning abilities make his over all intellectual functioning difficult to summarize by a single score. R. Crowley Psychologist He is not SLIC but his autism is preventing him from being able to do regular class room activities. Do you know how difficult it is to know, that your kid tries so hard to learn, grow, and develop into a functioning human being, only to be held back this learning disability? The social side is really hard on him, especially this past week when he thought he was loosing his mom because I started to socialize with people by myself. I cant date or go off into the sunset like some people, I am his MOM and that comes first before anybody. I wish folks would get that. The majority of my time at home this past 10/11 years was spent going to meetings, talking to teachers and learning about IEP. I went to all of those meeting by myself, 95% of the time. I think I did a pretty good job but credit must be given to my son for not quitting school, and working very hard to learn what he needs to live in this world. This world is a pain in the ass sometimes, yet he wants to interact with it. This is a new year with its own set of challenges to over come such as girls, guitar lessons, and being a teenager. I know it was hard for most of us when we were his age. Imagine how hard it is for him. The good news is he is like his mom, he keeps trying to reach out even though rejection is always a possibility. He gives me courage to keep moving, and becoming a better person. I think he is the best son in the world.
