Automatic Systematic has ended and we are installing our next show, THERE TO HERE: Nine Artists Personal, Cultural Odysseys, which will feature nine artists in 8 of our exhibition rooms– Aliza Augustine, Monica S. Camin, Gerardo Castro, Taiwo DuVall, Roshanak Elmendorf, Kyung Jeon, Ibou Ndoye, Leona Strassberg Steiner and Lora van der Meule– who draw inspiration from their personal cultural history to create narrative paintings, drawings, photographs and videos that tell their stories. All the artists in the exhibition currently live in, or have a connection to Jersey City, or elsewhere in the state of New Jersey, and most are first generation American. Sharing stories of gender, race and the Holocaust, being a German Jew in Latin America, Afro-Cuban magic and folklore, Africa, the Caribbean and Harlem, female identity in Iran, female stereotypes of Korean and Japan, West-African family life, female identity in Israel-Palestine and traditional costume of Zeeland, an island region in The Netherlands– each artist has a unique eloquence and ability to convey what they and their families have lived, through their art. We have reserved our 9th room for a Community Cultural History exhibit where these artists, as well as other people from the area, will share photos, documents and written narratives that tell the stories of their own families and where they come from. This exhibit will develop over the duration of the show with the intention of covering the walls of this room with a celebration of the diversity of our community. THERE TO HERE: Nine Artists Personal, Cultural Odysseys will run from July 10 - August 17. Artist Reception will be on Sunday, July 13 from 3-6 and an Artist Talk, on Sunday, August 3rd from 3-6p. At both events we will have drumming by two of the artists in the show, Ibou Ndoye and Taiwo DuVall. Taiwo Duvall is a prominent figure in the history of African and Afro-Cuban drumming in the US, collaborating with an impressive roster of musicians from The Grateful Dead, Santana and John Lee Hooker, to John Coltrane. Mark your calendars!
