Automobile vs. power pole and power lines near intersection of U.S. Hwy. 84 & River Falls Road Authorities responded to a report of an automobile accident in River Falls Friday night at approximately 11:45 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 84 and River Falls Road. Covington County Deputies with assistance from River Falls Fire Department, Andalusia and River Falls Police, Alabama State Troopers and EMS all responded to assist with the accident that involved a passenger truck and a power pole. Covington Electric Utility crews were also called to the scene as live power lines were completely down across U.S. Hwy. 84 causing emergency crews to be unable to reach the patients inside the vehicle. Chief Deputy David Anderson reported emergency officials were not able to approach the vehicle due to the power lines still being electrified upon arrival. Anderson requested the 911 center to notify Covington Electric Co-op officials of the urgency of the situation. The 911 center advised after making contact with CEC officials that their approximate response time would be 25 minutes. At 12:09 a.m. Saturday morning, Chief Deputy Anderson advised the first CEC utility worker arrived to assess the electrical situation. Deputies also reported the vehicle involved had Mississippi license plates and possibly three passengers. One occupant reportedly exited the vehicle while the downed power lines were still hot and left the scene on foot with unknown injuries. The wreck is affecting many CEC customers from River Falls, across Covington Co. Rd. 70 (Heath to River Falls Rd.) As well as CEC customers along U.S. Hwy. 29 from Heath back into the north side of Andalusia. Stay tuned for further updates.
