Autumn is a time for slowing down and assessing what we have - TopicsExpress

Autumn is a time for slowing down and assessing what we have accomplished to date. Reviewing books we have read this year, movies we have watched, courses we have participated in, and goals we have met, are all points of reflection that help us gauge our progress by our own standards. The yardstick we use to measure is of our own creation, and the items we measure are ones we choose, but I often wonder if we should kick up our standards a notch or two? The idea of moving beyond our comfort zone is a good one because that is where we can expand our horizons. If we always read the same genre of book, view the same type of movie, study the same materials, and stick to the same map sooner or later we will find that we are fully entrenched in a ditch we have dug by our choices. Although for some this does not seem a “bad” thing, over time our choices becomes enduring habits that lead us down a path that determines our destiny. Instead of repeating what we know, why not take a detour and experience a new way of doing something even though it may be uncomfortable and not the norm for us? Instead of reading the latest and greatest fiction novel, why not ask someone you admire what book they can recommend as a good choice to read? Instead of seeing the type of movie that you prefer, why not see something educational that entertains as well as enlightens? Instead of frequenting the same restaurants, why not try a local eatery that focuses on ethnic food that you have not tried before? The choices for expansion are endless and they are as close by as a search on the internet. You do not have to do something unique daily, but once a week would give you 52 new experiences yearly and surely some would be “keepers” that you would continue to use. Life is about living to the fullest, not becoming stuck in a rut. If happiness and enthusiasm are distant reminders of things you once did and enjoyed then it is time to rethink what you are doing. The past only has a stronghold on you if you permit it As we mature and view the lifestyle we have created, it is only ourselves that hold us back from expanding and enhancing that lifestyle. Worry, fear, trepidation, and disenchantment with life are always lurking in the shadows and will overtake us if we allow it. Likewise, happiness, goodness, and the riches of life are there too beckoning us to move forward. The choice and direction are ours. I hope that you choose life, now, in the moment, and live it to the fullest potential that is your birthright.
