Avalon Group returns to support the 5th Durban filmMart In line with Durban FilmMart’s (DFM) 5th year celebrations, South Africa’s largest and oldest independent Cinema Exhibition and Entertainment Company, The Avalon Group, are back to support the DFM; which will be taking place on 18 – 21 July 2014 at the Southern Sun Elangeni Hotel in Durban. Boasting 75 years in the film industry, this family run film business has a long, rich and deep rooted history in South Africa. Established in 1939 by the late AB Moosa Snr. The Avalon Group is led by his son, Chairman Moosa, one of the longest serving cinema executives in the world, as well as Moosa Moosa’s son Managing Director AB Moosa, who has served over 20 years in the film and entertainment industry. Together, this family have built Avalon into one the worlds most renowned and respected film businesses; who can boast the World Record for the longest uninterrupted relationships with the International and esteemed 20th Century Fox. The Avalon Group, which was one of the first importers of Bollywood movies to South Africa in the 1940s, is currently based at Sun Coast Casino in Durban. Movie goers may be familiar with Avalon’s CineCentres at Sun Coast Casino, but the Avalon Group have really stretched their capacity to include their business ventures into live entertainment, production and distribution. The Avalon Group has been co-sponsors of the Durban International Film Festival from its inception and has started supporting and participating in the Durban FilmMart, a developmental initiative created by the Durban International Film Festival and the Durban Film Office through the funding of the Durban City. “We are happy to lend support to the Durban FilmMart,” says Managing Director AB Moosa. This year will be Avalon’s second year it’s been involved with the DFM; “Our aim is to contribute towards assisting the Durban FilmMart in trying to achieve their objective, which is to provide filmmakers the opportunity to meet distributors and sales agents, assist in their growing reputation and help towards the events that will take place,” explains AB Moosa. “The Durban FilmMart aims to give African Filmmakers invaluable opportunities to further their ideas and projects. Having an industry heavy weight, with many years in the film industry in South Africa and internationally, the Avalon Group will bring substantial experience, skill and knowledge to Filmmakers attending the DFM,” says Durban Film Office’s Toni Monty. The Durban FilmMart will be taking place on the 18 – 21 July 2014 at the Elangeni Tsogo Sun Hotel in Durban, alongside the Durban International Film Festival which will be held over the 17 – 27 July. The Durban FilmMart looks to create a networking platform for African filmmakers, as well as offer them the opportunities to find funding and sponsorship to help complete their films projects.
