‘Avengers 2‘ is coming! And, if you’re reading this, chances are strong that you are one of the many people who made ‘The Avengers‘ one of the biggest hits of all time and you’re as excited as we are for the sequel, ‘Age of Ultron.’ Although we’ve already got a nice ‘Iron Man’ movie to tide us over and have a few others on the way, there’s nothing quite like seeing all of the Avengers together in one movie, kicking ass and saving the world as modern cinema’s biggest and craziest superhero team. We still have three additional Marvel movies to go before we get to the next big Marvel superhero team-up, but you can whet your appetite for more epic superhero action by going over everything we know about ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron’ at the moment. When Will ‘Avengers 2′ Open in Theaters? Marvel ‘Avengers 2′ will open in theaters on May 1, 2015, putting it in position to start the summer off with a bang … in about two years. It’s certainly not a randomly selected date, either. The first ‘Avengers’ film smashed box office records when it opened on May 4, 2012 and ‘Iron Man 3′ broke the bank with its May 3, 2013. At this rate, Marvel and Disney look poised to set the summer movie bar high every year for the foreseeable future. EVERY THING WE KNOW ABOUT THE NEXT MARVEL TEAM-UP What is the “Age of Ultron,” Anyway? Marvel In the Marvel comics, Ultron is an aggressive, villainous A.I. housed inside the body of a killer robot. He’s highly intelligent and has a bone to pick with the the Avengers, who are responsible for his creation and his multiple defeats. Being a robot, he’s able to repair himself following every encounter with Earth’s mightiest heroes, becoming stronger and tougher every time he shows up. Although certainly not known too well by casual fans, Ultron has been a staple of the comics for decades now and one of the greatest recurring Avengers villains. In the comics, Ultron is the creation of Hank Pym (AKA, Ant-Man), but the film will retool his origins, with early buzz suggesting that Tony Stark will be responsible in the Marvel movie universe. He’s set to be played by the great James Spader, who will bring Ultron to life via motion capture and his amazing, icy voice. Although he remains mum on the details, Joss Whedon promises an interesting take on the character, saying, “He’s not a happy guy, which means he’s an interesting guy.” For a more complete look at Ultron, we’ve got you covered. Which Avengers Are Returning? Marvel At the moment, it looks like every major actor from the first film will be back for the sequel. After some aggressive (and very public) negotiations, Robert Downey Jr. signed on to reprise his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man, earning a monstrous paycheck in the process. One-by-one, the rest of the cast was confirmed, with Chris Evans (Steve Rogers/Captain America), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanov/Black Widow), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/The Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton/Hawkeye) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) returning the fold. In fact, the only major characters not returning from the first film seems to be Tom Hiddleston‘s villainous Loki and Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts. Behind the camera, Joss Whedon is once again writing and directing. So, in short, it’s the same folks responsible for the first one. You know what they say about fixing things that aren’t broken. Which New Superheroes Are Joining the ‘Avengers 2′ Roster? Marvel Early in the process of developing ‘Avengers 2,’ it was revealed that the characters of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch were being added to the film’s superhero line-up. Although “mutants” in the Marvel comic book universe (and the children of X-Men villain Magneto!), we suspect this brother/sister duo will be more traditional superheroes on film. The role of Quicksilver, whose powers include super-speed, has recently been filled by ‘Kick-Ass’ star Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The reality-altering Scarlet Witch will be played by the very talented and on-the-rise Elizabeth Olsen. When and Where is ‘Avengers 2′ Shooting? Marvel Although the film is currently knee-deep in preproduction, it has been revealed that ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron’ will go before cameras in January of 2014 (or February or March, depending on who you hear it from), nearly a year and a half before it’s set to arrive in theaters. We still don’t know where (or if) Whedon and his crew will do an location-specific shooting like they did with New York City in ‘The Avengers,’ but the bulk of filming is expected to take place at Shepperton Studios in England, with exterior shooting being done in and around London. Shepperton Studios has been hosting major film shoots for close to a century and it’s apparently worked out well for Marvel Studios — ‘Captain America: The First Avenger,’ ‘Thor: The Dark World’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ have all shot there.
