Averted a disaster this afternoon with one of my hives. Was - TopicsExpress

Averted a disaster this afternoon with one of my hives. Was planning on splitting them next sunday but apparently they had other plans and started to swarm on me this afternoon. They were starting to form a cluster 70 feet up in a tall alder tree, well out of reach. Then I notice a small pile of bees in front of the hive where they were coming out of. Being curious I moved the bees with my finger and spotted my marked queen, held my hand still and she walked up onto my hand and then I placed my hand by the hive entrance and she walks back in. Went and got a queen excluder, went through the hive making sure that there were no more queen cells, and then I place the excluder underneath the hive. This will keep the queen in there till next sunday when I can split them. The video is of the bees fanning pheromones to let the flyers know that they are to come back home. 2 hours latter they were all back in. Sometimes you get lucky.
