Avian Medical Case of the Day: This sweet Umbrella Cockatoo was found in a home with the body of his dead owner, along with the other parrot that had also died. We dont know how long he was there with nobody to take care of him, but he is in remarkably good shape. He is adorable, fully feathered, talks, dances, and loves to cuddle. (Sorry, he will not be available for adoption until at least Jan. 19, and will not be placed in a foster home.) So think about this aspect of avian health care: what would happen if you died unexpectedly? Would somebody know within 24 hours and be there to take care of your pets? Have you left written pet care instructions with a couple of people, or placed them so they are easily found in your home with other emergency information? This bird lived, but his housemate died, all because nobody knew the owner was dead for a few days. Dont let this happen to your animals! Stop reading Facebook for a couple of minutes right now and think about whether you need better planning, or if you know a friend or relative who may need you to step in if there was an emergency. Exchange information and house keys with at least one other person who will notice if they dont hear from you every day.
