Avocados have been a much maligned and misunderstood fruit thanks to the low-fat/calorie-counting craze were still trying to extract ourselves from. They are an absolute powerhouse of nutrition, the health benefits are many and varied (including strangely enough an ability to help reduce bad cholesterol, LDL, despite being high calorie and high fat - go figure!) They contain all of the essential amino acids (the ones our bodies cant make themselves and have to be acquired through diet), they are a source of omega 3s (although a greater source of omega 6s, which we need to be mindful of with our omega 3/6 balance), a good source of protein, a high source of fibre (supplying up to 40% of our daily requirements in some cases) and a healthy range of phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals. Adding one (or half) to your smoothie for example will help keep you full for longer (one of my main complaints about smoothies!) and will add a creamy texture with no added flavour as such. So, perhaps the old adage needs to be changed - an avocado a day keeps the doctor away!
