Award Winning Northern Midlands Book Council congratulates local author Nic Haygarth on being one of the joint winners of the inaugural Marita Bardenhagen Memorial Award for local history. Nic won the award for the book he wrote for Council to commemorate 200 years since the Norfolk Islanders arrived to settle the Norfolk Plains, titled “The Norfolk Plains: a History of Longford, Cressy, Perth and Bishopsbourne, Tasmania.” The Marita Bardenhagen Memorial Award commemorates the contribution made to the study and writing of local history in Tasmania by Dr Marita Bardenhagen (1961-2012). It is a biennial prize acknowledging outstanding original research in the field of local history with significant Tasmanian content. The other joint winner of the award was Lorraine Dooley for her book “Building on Firm Foundations”. The book tells the story of 5 generations of the Cooper Family in Tasmania who were stonemasons, builders and architects involved in the construction of such icons as the Cascade Brewery and the Royal Hobart Hospital.
