Martinez | The Brownsville Herald | Posted 15 hours ago What began as a simple search for grant money for the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office ended in a treasure find. The treasure that resulted, after much hard work, is a Star of Texas Award honoring fallen ICE Agent Jaime Jorge Zapata, one of the highest awards issued by Gov. Rick Perry’s office. Zapata will be awarded the honor posthumously. Zapata, 32, a Brownsville native who worked for U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, was killed Feb. 15, 2011, near San Luis Potosi, Mexico, in an attack by members of the Zetas drug cartel. His partner Victor Avila was wounded in the attack. The Star of Texas Award honors peace officers, firefighters and emergency medical first responders injured or killed in the line of duty. The District Attorney’s Office nominated Zapata for the award in June and received confirmation two weeks ago that his family would receive the award on Jaime’s behalf, said Melissa Zamora, spokeswoman for the District Attorney’s Office.
