Award-winning author and historian, Dr Janet Butler, will visit Kiama Library on the Saturday 24 May as part of a new state-wide program launched by the State Library of New South Wales. Kiama will be one of the first stops in the tour, Going Places – Authors on Tour, which will bring some the best Australian writers to regional towns and cities throughout New South Wales for a series of free events and author talks. Janet will talk about her most recent book - Kitty’s War, which received the Australian History Prize in the 2013 NSW Premier’s History Awards. The book is based on the previously unpublished war diaries of Great War army nurse Sister Kit McNaughton, Kitty’s War charts the remarkable wartime experiences of Kitty, who went from a small town to a troopship bound for Egypt and finished the war as Australia’s first plastic surgery nurse. At this free event, Dr Butler will share the fascinating story of Kitty’s journey into war, how this important Australian story was discovered, and the processes involved in researching and writing an award-winning work of history. Dr Janet Butler is an Honorary Associate in the History Program at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia. Her research interests encompass war and autobiographical narratives. Her visit is limited to four New South Wales locations in total, as part of the 2014 Going Places – Authors on Tour program. Further events scheduled for the tour will be announced shortly.
