Awesome Grandmas Let me tell you about mine as she was such a huge part of my life and a huge (the good) part of what I am: She never went to college, but was one of the smartest people I knew. She was always current on world events, knew (and, well, lived much) history, spoke 5 languages fluently and read and wrote a few more. She was completely blind in one eye and had very poor vision in the other. I think it was a result of polio. Yet, she read (and at the very end had read) the entire newspaper every day. Despite the fact that her and my most wonderful grandpa were quite poor (they had their first kids (including my mom) when the Great Depression hit, they scrimped by, had their kids attend college and helped everyone they knew who was having a hard time. She was devoutly Catholic, but embrassive of all other religions. She had friends that were Jewish and Hindu and (lol) even Lutheran and attended services with them and celebrated their traditions. But, while she had friends that were atheists, she said she could not understand someone not believing that there was a superior being (or atleast force) greater than us. She had a damaged back and, since the time she was 40 years old, wore a body brace. I dont know exactly what her condition was but she was in near constant pain and her bones would fracture daily. Despite that she worked like a dog. Her house was impeccably clean (okay, I didnt get that part) and she was always doing something for a neighbor or relative. She was a fantastic cook and would make things that took all day. She would make enough for an army and feed everyone she knew. You had to eat at her house or she would be hurt. She was very proud of her heritage (mostly Slovenian) but prouder to be an American. She loved learning about all cultures and and peoples histories. She looked like Mother Theresa. RIP -- Mary Johanna Theresa Francic Pauc.
