Awesome, awesome, awesome evening at Cantebury House at Rhodes addressing students from Univ of Minnesota - Social Work, Physics, Gender Studies, Environmental Science, Anthropology, Biology, Sociology, Nursing, Psychology etc. Powerful interaction outlining and dispelling the myths of what Afrika is and what it stands for. In the end I took a long walk home in the dark because I needed to burn the energy that had built up in me. They offered to drive me but I wanted to walk. Somewhere along the road when I got closer to home, a car made a quick U turn and came to stop next to me. At first, I thought it might be trouble, but me being me, I also opened myself up to the possibility of receiving beauty and love. The guy opened the window and spoke to me from a safe distance. He probably knew that I might be scared. Who would not be if we live in a country where people are slaughtered like this? He said to me, :Molo sisi, u right, are you safe? And I told him that I am almost home and I thanked him for caring. And he said to me: Be safe and sleep well and he drove off. There are many beautiful black men like him, I know because I have met them countless times. One day I got a puncture in the middle of nowhere in the early evening in Mpumalanga, three of them came out of the woods, my tyre was replaced in a few minutes. None of them touched me, my phone was not stolen and they asked me to call them when I get home. And I did. Tonight, as we grieve loved ones who were mercilessly killed or raped, I take this moment to give some love to black men who care. Be safe and good night.
