Aww, a little pacifist for you, Sissay (Erin Higgs--apparently we are a teeny bit German, and this guy was a surgeon so pissy about not being in German/Prussian wars that he became an indentured servant for four years to get to the US): Our fifth great-grandfather Bio of Magdalenas father, Christopher Ribble: Christopher Ribble came from Germany to get away from the wars going on there. He was a surgeon and refused to bear arms but was conscripted to care of the soldiers anyway during the Revolutionary War here. He was wounded in battle and practiced medicine in Blackbury, West Virginia, [maybe just Virginia] after the war until he was ninety-seven years old. His war record is in the Library of Congress but since he was not in the army he has no army record, but he was commended for his service by General George Washington. Christopher Ribble, Sr. resided on Toms Creek in Montgomery Co., on lands he purchased from John Stewart. The tract was formerly owned by Robert Ritchie who had purchased it from Robert McGee. In November 1794 John Stewart of Maryland appointed his friend Thomas Hail {Hale} of Toms Creek to make the deed and collect the money. {Montgomery Will Book, p. 209}. The deed was recorded for the 140 acres in County Deed Book B., p. 275}. It is believed that Christopher Ribble and his first wife Katherine [also Katrinka} Brenckenhof arrived in America about 1777 and settled first in Chester Co., Coventry Township, Pensylvania where his name appears on the tax list from 1778 to 1782 under the spelling Stophel Riebel. About 1782 the family moved to Franklin Co., Virginia where they owned land on Gills Creek. The first four children were born in Pennsylvania and the next five appear to have been born in Franklin County. Following the birth of his daughter, Susanna, the ninth child, in 1792, his wife Katherine died. Two years later on February 7 , 1794 Christopher Ribble, Sr. married his second wife Mary Kegley {baptized Anna Maria Goeckel}, the daugher of George and Catherine John George Kegley, Sr. and his wife Katarina of Wythe Co., Virginia. This young wife of twenty-six years had nine children of the first marriage to care for, with their ages ranging from 2 years to 17 years. She added eight more children to the household, six sons and 2 daughters {family records from Ada Cosner, Marquerite Worrell and Walter Shriner; Montgomery County marriage records}. Dr. Christopher Ribble added several small tracts of land to the home place, buying 54 acres and 11 acres from John McGee in 1804 and 13 acres from the Surfaces [Montgomery County Deed Books C, p. 303; D,pp.121, 122 , 362}. Owning lands on both sides of Toms Creek he applied for a write of Adquod damnum for a sawmill and dam across the creek {Montgomery County Will Book 4, p. 265, 1826}. Christopher Ribble was a practicing physician and left his son, John, by this second wife, his medicines in the shop and all his books. John was responsible for training his nephew, Christian Kegly to be a medical doctor also. Christian was the son of Johann Ludwig Kegley and his wife Barbara Ribble, {sister to Christopher Ribble, MD.} of Wythe Co., Virginia. Johann Ludwig {John Ludwig Kegley} was Anna Marie Mary Kegley and Christophers second wifes brother. Barbara Ribble was of the first family and along with Christian Kegley and his widowed mother, he and his married sister moved to Johnson Co., Indiana where Christian practiced medicine for many years, leaving a son John who also served as a physician. {Johnson County, Indiana records} Henry Ribble, son of Christopher by his second wife, also became a physician. Many grandson s of Christopher Ribble were in the same profession {Family records from Ada Cosner, Mrs. Mar querite Worrell and Walter Shriner}. Christopher Ribbles first children were Elizabeth who married Emanuel McCombs. MAGDALENA MARRIED JOHN MYERS, Hannah married Daniel Ebling, Barbara married Johann Ludwig Kegley, Catherine married Abraham Gharst, Johas married Mary Croy, and he died in Niles, Michigan. David married Mary Surfus {Surface}, daughter of Martin and Catherine Surface. {Montgomery County marriages records} Mary married Leonard Murkey {Markey} and Susannah the youngest of the first family married John Johannes C. Kegley {John C. Kegley , the youngest brother of Anna Marie Mary Kegley, who would become her step-mother. Susannah and her husband John moved to Johnson Co., Indiana, later to Chickasaw Co., Iowa. Barbara , widow of Johann Ludwig {John Ludwig Kegley} and all her children also moved to Indiana. {Marriage records, family records from descendants}. Of the second family of Dr. Christopher Ribble, his son George and his wife Sarah Surface moved to Perry Township, Delaware Co., Indiana at the same time as David Ribble and his wife Mary Surface. Mary and Sarah were the daughters of Martin and Catherine Surface. Later in life George Ribble and his wife moved to Page Co ., Iowa where they were prominent residents of Clarinda. In 1836 George and David Ribble then of Delaware Co., Indiana appointed Henry Ribble of Montgomery Co., Virginia to convey real estate, part of the estate of Chrisopher Ribble, then deceased {Family records, Montgomery Co., marriages; Montgomery Co., Will Book 5, p. 399. This information was sent to me by Hal Hoffner on 4-17-2003 and was sent to him by Walter Shriner. Stophel Riebel, aka Christopher Ribble, arrived November 28, 1773 with his wife Sibella Magdalen from the port of Rotterdam and was indentured to George Syphers of Evesham Twp. Burlington Co., West Jersey as a servant for 4 years. Source of this record is Indentures in Phila, PA 1773 by Mayor Wm. Fisher , pg. 164. He is then picked up in 1778-1782 tax list in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., PA. In 1782 he is on the tax list in Giles Creek, Franklin Co., Virginia. In 1792 he became a land owner in Tom s Creek, Montgomery Co., Virginia. This is the P.O. of Blacksburg, Virginia. The source of this information was given to me by Mary Ellen Wright of Lake Forest, Illinois. Now the immigration records do show Christopher Ribble....aka Stophel Riebel....ing over on the ship with a wife named Sibella Magdelan.....so far no one can find any information on this lady as of right now..... Mary Ellen Wright also has a copy of Christopher and Anna Mary Kegleys marriage bond..... interesting enough his surname is spelled Reble on this bond, her maiden name is spelled Keagley. Signatures were witnessed by Paul Epling and no where is Mary Kegley s fathers name nor was he there to witness the signatures. We know John George Kegley, Sr. was still alive at this time, although Mary was about 26 years old when she married Christopher, and he was much older than her also. Could they have gotten married without her father knowing it or his permission?????
