Aye SCOTLAND! Arguably one of the biggest days in your history as a nation coming up tomorrow with the big vote. Indeed my last name is undoubtedly Italian, but my Scottish roots run very strong in my colourful make up, as a Canadian. I am a Sinclair, clan of the Highlands, and my grandmother with all her sisters, made the crossing over to Canada, to the new world. Canada is essentially a union, somewhat similar to the United Kingdom, based on a federal constitutional democracy and multi level parliaments. On Canada’s coat of arms, Scotland is represented twice and one of the four original founding nations of Canada. New Scotland - Nova Scotia is one these for four original provinces. Yes, we have a freaking Unicorn (thanks!!) on our national symbol. Sea to shining sea, Canada has one of the strongest democracies in the world, which has not been without challenge, fragility, strain, understanding and vigilance to balance, represent and protect the rights and cultures of all our people under an umbrella of nations and ethnicities. One of the best trips I have done was in “wee” Scotland. No other place in the world reminded me so much of my own country; any area of Scotland to any area of Canada. It was a feeling I got more than anything else. The world identifies and has always seen Scotland as a nation, as a country for hundreds of years. Being a nationalist does not mean that you have need a passport and a separate tax form, it is a feeling that comes from within, your heart, this cannot be changed, or taken away, because it lies within you. The world is changing, and so is nationalism, it’s important to ponder this very, very carefully. We are so very lucky as democratic nations to have the right to vote for our future, in peace. The vast majority of the nations in the world would give anything to have not one.. but TWO governments working for the rights of individual, UNITED, as one. On a political note, Scotland now has the upper hand, the trump card to make these changes in the union to better represent her interests; as a Canadian.. just trust me on this one. Westminster has noticed and now they always will, your voices now will always be heard. So I say to my Scottish friends, today is a great day to be Scottish, aye. Every time I look at my United Kingdom Ancestry visa in my passport, which gives me an open door to not only the United Kingdom, but Europe as a whole; I think of my Scottish grandmother, I think of Scotland, I think of the United Kingdom, I think of Europe, I think we are all better together.
