BACK HEATHROW - big business masquerading as a community group. ‘Back Heathrow’ still calls itself a community group – despite having spent unprecedented sums of (Heathrow) money on a propaganda campaign, the likes of which I personally have never seen. They have spent millions on wildly extravagant ads in local and national papers (some taking up entire front and back pages). They have bombarded and harrassed residents with highly questionable phone call surveys. They have bought up vast bus stop and tube station ads, they purchased the biggest and grandest stalls at recent Party political conferences, and so on and on and on. They now claim to be recruiting ‘supporters’ but the manner in which they have done so takes disingenuous advertising to a whole new low. Asked something along the lines of “Hello resident - do you want Heathrow to expand, or do you want Heathrow (and by extension the wider economy) to shrivel up and die” - most reasonable people would feel obliged to opt for expansion. But it is a false choice, as even the new CEO of Heathrow admitted recently to Parliamentarians. I understand that Heathrow, like many companies, would like nothing more than to have monopoly control of the sector. The many millions they spend today in the hope of purchasing Government policy, will be paid back hundreds, even thousands of times over in public subsidies if they succeed. It would be nothing short of a national scandal if any Chancellor, of any Party, were to allow that to happen.
