BAD-DAD DAY (12-year old edition): Kai and I had to circle the block a few times before we saw an open parking space. Backing in, I found myself blocked by an individual standing in the space, who told me, You cant park here. I started to respond that in fact, I could park in a public space and that he cant reserve it by standing in it, but quickly realized I was starting one of those NYC conversations that I usually make fun of. Also, by some miracle, a car across the street pulled out, so I u-turned and grabbed the spot. As we got out of our car, the guys buddy was pulling into his designated personal spot. Walking by, I called out, Hey, you cant park there. Surprised look from the driver, muttering from the parking reservationist. I spent the remainder of our walk pondering how I could rationalize my smartass behavior to Kai, when I constantly lecture him against that very thing. Finally he remarked, That was really funny what you said. How do you come up with that stuff? Im gonna miss this occasional unconditional Dad-support once he becomes a real teenager.
